Snowflakes and Sparkles: How to Decorate
Your Home for the Holidays
by Pamela Aldaba, Project Designer at Boon
The scent of hot chocolate and gingerbread, the coziness of knitted clothes, and the familiar tunes of Jose Marie Chan are just a few telltale signs of the holidays fast approaching. The season ushers in a whirlwind of parties and family gatherings, a time when we celebrate with loved ones. Amid these festivities, there are three things we often look forward to the most: gifts, food, and, of course, the decor!
Decorating our homes is a way to embrace the warmth of the holiday spirit and make our spaces feel extra special. Whether you are decking the halls with traditional decor or experimenting with fresh, trendy styles, the season offers endless opportunities to celebrate with joy and creativity in the comfort of your own home. Here are some tips to bring the twinkling wonder of the holidays into your home.
Choose a Theme
Start by selecting a theme or color palette that reflects your personality. It can be a timeless classic or something unexpected! This will be the foundation of your decor.
Table Settings
One of the easiest and most versatile ways to incorporate the holidays into your home is by switching up your table setting. Add a special touch by DIYing or including personalized items!
Dinnerware: There are various types of plates that you can use for the holidays! Whether you prefer holiday-themed motifs or simple solid colors, it’s an easy way to create festivity when dining.
Napkins, Placemats, and Coasters: If you don’t want to invest in new dinnerware, consider creating variety through table napkins, napkin rings, table mats, and coasters! Make it extra fun by picking out decor that matches your chosen theme.
Elegant Centerpiece: Add some greenery to your tablescapes! Decorate it with ornaments, candles, and ribbons for a more festive look.
Wreaths and Garlands
A classic Christmas decoration! Whether you’re decorating your front door, staircase, or console table, this is another way to add more greenery and charm to your home.
Wreath: You can keep it simple with a classic green wreath or add texture by opting for one with artificial snow! You can also incorporate ornaments and ribbons that you used on your tree for a cohesive look.
Garlands: Another fun way to add decor to railings, doors, windows, consoles, and shelves. Don’t limit yourself to evergreen leaf garlands-– get creative with paper snowflakes, tinsel, ribbons, or even little stuffed toys. Explore different ideas and see what suits your space!
Lights
Lights are undoubtedly one of the most magical things you can add to your space.
Candles: Opt for festive scented candles to bring an extra sense of warmth. LED candles are another great alternative if you are looking for something flameless and long-lasting.
Outdoor lights: This is the first thing you and your guests will see. Decorate the outside of your home with twinkling lights to add a welcoming glow. You can adorn your roof, doors, and windows with string lights for that extra sparkle.
Indoor lights: Light up your space by lining garlands, railings, and windows with string lights! Try using mason jars with fairy lights and LED candles for a more moody atmosphere.
Metals and Glitter: For those concerned about open flames and electrical lights, decor with glitter or metallic finishes is a great alternative! It adds texture and sparkle without the risk of heat or excessive power consumption.
Christmas Trees, Menorahs, and More
The holidays are a season for everyone! No matter your tradition, there’s always a way to celebrate the season's joy with your loved ones.
Christmas Tree: Choose a tree that fits your space—too big and it may overwhelm the room, too small and it could seem lost. Decorate with a variety of materials to create a dynamic, personalized look.
Menorah: When picking a menorah, opt for something versatile—one you can easily outfit with different decorations. If you want to be creative, you can always DIY or use unconventional items as your menorah! You can also decorate the display with garlands, themed table runners, and ornaments.
Alternative Centerpieces: Don’t limit yourself to a tree if it’s not something you practice or your space doesn’t permit it. It can be a special table to hold all your gifts, a vase with a holiday-themed arrangement, or a gingerbread house!
Finishing Touches
Small, thoughtful touches can tie your entire holiday decor together.
Stockings: Sew or knit your stockings for a personal touch, or purchase ready-made ones and personalize them with names, embroidery, ribbons, or unique fabrics!
Advent calendars: Another fun way to count down the days to Christmas with your loved ones! Turn it into a family activity by adding small trinkets each day—chocolates, mini gifts, or heartwarming notes.
Pillows and blankets: Adding themed pillows and blankets gives your space an extra sense of coziness! Choose festive colors and textured fabrics to create personality in the room.
Scent: A wonderful way to fully immerse your home in the holiday spirit is through scent. Whether it’s festive candles, baked cinnamony treats, or pinecones and holly, your choices are endless!
Decorating your home for the holidays is the perfect opportunity to infuse your space with love and joy. It is a time to celebrate with your family and create lasting memories. From decorating your front door to placing the finishing touch atop your tree- all of these can be made into cherished traditions when shared with loved ones. Embrace the holiday season and add that sparkle to your home. Happy decorating!
